Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Awareness
Female genital mutilation is a culturally and gender-specific issue that faces many women from parts of Africa and the Middle East. The process involves stripping women of certain parts of their genitalia out of a deep-rooted fear of women's sexuality. The procedure violates women in these parts of the world, but is still seen as a right of passage for many people Despite the severe immediate and long-term effects, over millions of immigrant and refugee women and girls are at risk of FGM. The IRCM has made it its mission to eradicate FGM practices in Maine, and we have successfully worked towards that goal.
