According to the CDC, sexual violence occurs to about 20% of women throughout their lifetime, with 1 out 3 of them raped under 17. For men, 1 out of 38 will experience rape in their lives, while 25% will experience it under 17 years old. These stats aren't accurate because sexual violence and abuse continue to go underreported. While it's difficult for sexual violence victims to come forward in general, it's even harder for immigrant and refugee women to seek help. Immigrant and refugee women and children face scrutiny from their community and fear seeking outside help. The IRCM serves as a voice and representative for sexual violence victims who may not have the ability to come forward.
